James Clinton Update

James Clinton, who worked at Manzanita Speedway, was walking along a sidewalk on March 25 when struck from behind by a pickup whose driver was texting.

James was transported to John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital where he spent several weeks in a coma in ICU. He was later transferred to North Mountain Rehabilitation and Medical Facility, 9155 North Third Street, Phoenix, Room 109, to deal with injuries that have left him unable to speak and paralyzed below the shoulders.

I have recently been working through his social worker at the facility, and his mother (who is a patient there on another floor), to come up with ways to stimulate his thinking, provide encouragement, and improve his circumstances. Several plans are being instigated with the help of many people.

One suggestion from James' mother was a photograph of his friends from the race track...and we now have a plan to make that happen.

Friday, November 27, Canyon Speedway Park is hosting day one of the Southwest Championships for non-wing sprint cars, midgets, and modified midgets/mini sprints. Rafael Alvarez has agreed to take a group photo in the pit grandstands shortly before the drivers' meeting that Friday. (Sort of like those elementary school photos that we used to "love.")

Anyone who can make it is welcome. Let's tell James that he's not been forgotten...and that he is appreciated. Thanks!

Both the winged and wingless forces will tackle USA Raceway's 3/8-mile clay oval for three nights on November 19^th, 20^th and 21^st, with more than $100,000 in "A" Feature money alone distributed over the course of the blockbuster event. A $15,000 share awaits the winner of the Lucas Oil ASCS season-ender on November 21^st, with the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region conqueror on November 21 pocketing $5,000.

Tennessee's Kevin Swindell became the 25th different winner of the Western World by topping the 2008 edition of the event last November, adding his name to a prestigious list of past winners that includes his father Sammy Swindell, who won the event in both 1980 and 1989.

Steve Kinser has claimed the most Western World titles with seven triumphs including wingless wins in 1982 and 1983 followed by winged wins in 1985, 1987, 1990, 1992 and 1996.

Ron Shuman is next on the list with five Western World triumphs, all of the wingless variety, with other drivers posting multiple Western World wins including Lealand McSpadden (3), Bud Kaeding (2), Mark Kinser (2), Jan Opperman (2) and Sammy Swindell (2).

Rockwall TX (10/28/09) by DarinShort.com. With Tuesday's weather related postponement of the 22nd Annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tire; this now creates an eye popping opportunity for sprint car teams and fans across the southern states.

In the span of 17 days there are now three sprint events with a combined winner's purse of $40,000.

Here are the details of each event:

Event #1, Nov. 5-7: 22nd annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tire. I-30 Speedway, Little Rock AR. Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint series sanctioned, $15,000 to win. Due to the weather postponement, event pre-entry has been extended through Nov. 4 at the rate of $150. On race day, event entry becomes $250. Event #2, Nov. 13-14: 3rd annual $85,000 City Vending November Sprint Shootout. Cowtown Speedway, Kennedale (DFW) TX. Head down I-30 from Little Rock to Ft. Worth the following week to this exciting unsanctioned, ASCS-type sprint rules, event. (ASCS mufflers required.) Friday night all sprint cars make the field in a $1,000 Twin or Triple 25's A-feature qualifiers. (46 sprints or more equals 3 A-features; as in 2008.) Saturday night's 35-lap championship winner will take home $7,000; with $500 to start the 24-car field. For reserved pit parking requests, teams must register by Nov. 8th at the track website, after that date, parking will be assigned by the race track on race night. A total field in excess of 200 teams will be on hand, as it is also the ASCS2 Series finales presented by Eagle Chassis. Sprint pre-entry is $150 whether you pre-enter online or register at the track on race night. There has been $10,000 added to this year's NSS purse, without any increase in ticket, pit or entry pricing. 2-day advance adult tickets are just $35 available at the track website only, through Nov. 12th, a savings of $10 over race night pricing. Should USA Raceway look into moving the wall back and implementing Safer Barreirs or some type of softwall in the turns at the speeds we run or just leave it alone? Or with all that room how about building a real short track on the inside.

"Clauson's Vegas victory narrows Driver of the Year point gap"

Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 31---Bryan Clauson has closed to within seven points of Brad Kuhn in the battle for the 2009 National Midget Driver of the Year Championship. Clauson narrowed the margin Saturday Night winning the 50-lap USAC Western Midget Car Series feature at The Bull Ring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with five events remaining. The victory was Clauson's eleventh midget feature victory of the season, with five different sanctioning organizations. The next event will be the 30th annual Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway on Thursday Nov. 12. Kuhn a two-time NMDOTY Champion finished second in last year's Copper Classic event, while Clauson's best PIR finish was 25th in the 2007 race. Action will then switch to Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway on Nov. 21 for the ARP/J.W. Mitchell Fall Classic, which will pay $5,000 to win. Kuhn has several runner-up feature finishes at the Oceanside 1/4-mile dirt oval. The Toyota Speedway at Irwindale California will then host the 69th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix on Thanksgiving Night Nov. 26. The final two events which will determine the Championship will be on Friday & Saturday Night's Nov. 27-28 events at Canyon Speedway Park (Peoria, Ariz.). The Southwest Championships will feature midget racing sanctioned by the AMRA, along with non-winged 360 sprint Cars, and mini sprints. Saturday Night's feature will pay $2,000-to-win. Trailing Kuhn and Clauson, and still in contention for the NMDOTY title are also '07 Champion Jerry Coons Jr.and Brad Loyet. Kuhn's primary car owner RW Motorsports leads the Car Owners Championship by 61 points over Loyet Motorsports. Spike (Chassis), and Ford-Esslinger (engine) have clinched the Manufacturers Championship. Missouri's Andrew Felker holds a two-point lead over Caleb Armstrong in the Design 500 Racewear rookie of the Year standings. Trailing the duo by an additional 14 points is Alex Bowman.
